Less than 4 hours ago I heard the great news that might change my life as a blogger:

WordPress 2.5 is almost here

As a reminder (I have been waiting to discover 3.0) But I am showing some love for 2.5

A customizable dashboard, multi-file upload, built-in galleries, one-click plugin upgrades, tag management, built-in Gravatars, full text feeds, and faster load times sound interesting? Then WordPress 2.5 might be the release for you. It’s been in the oven for a while, and we’re finally ready to open the doors a bit to give you a taste.

WordPress 2.7 is here!

After playing around for a couple of weeks with the new WordPress 2.7 interface on beta, I am happy that WordPress.org announced the stable version today. (download at: http://wordpress.org/)

Here is what they have mentioned in their release:

The first thing you’ll notice about 2.7 is its new interface. From the top down, they’ve listened to our feedback and thought deeply about the design and the result is a WordPress that’s just plain faster. Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did in a previous version.

Next you’ll begin to notice the new features subtly sprinkled through the new interface: the new dashboard that you can arrange with drag and drop to put the things most important to you on top, QuickPress, comment threading, paging, and the ability to reply to comments from your dashboard, the ability to install any plugin directly from WordPress.org with a single click, and sticky posts.

Digging in further you might notice that every screen is customizable. Let’s say you never care about author on your post listings — just click “Screen Options” and uncheck it and it’s instantly gone from the page. The same for any module on the dashboard or write screen. If your screen is narrow and the menu is taking up too much horizontal room, click the arrow to minimize it to be icon-only, and then go to the write page and drag and drop everything from the right column into the main one, so your posting area is full-screen. (For example I like hiding everything except categories, tags, and publish. I put categories and tags on the right, and publish under the post box.)

Update: As of right now, there are 87,441 downloads for WP 2.7!
Now that’s powerful!
Another update:
As of 12/13/08 there are 222,905 downloads. To keep track with the downloads counter go here.

A review of the wpToGo app for the G1 phone!

This is just a quick post to review a great application (in my opinion) to blog from.

The phone is none other than the true iPhone killer, the T-Mobile G1 powered by Google’s Android (do you recall when I mentioned that we may get a free Google OS by 2010? Well, it’s getting closer!).

This app has all the basic options that any WordPress blogger may need, whether you host your own wordpress or you have a wordpress.com however, it,s only the basic options you will get, for example, you can add tags, categories, links from within your post, bold or italic for formatting and also included is to upload pictures.
It does need a lot more options, for example, a spll chck! Or at least more formatting options. But for now, it’s a great tool to have on hand.

Ofcourse I have just used it to write this post, now I’ve got some emails to take care of.

P.S. for iPhone owners, you can get the app made by wordpress from iphone.wordpress.org

How to fix 301 moved permanently error that may block wordpress from search engines

301

I know the title is long.

And I know this may not relate to this blog, but… someone needed to fix this!

The situation:

I have completely moved all my searches to duckduckgo (read the story), and I’m in the process of reviving this blog, however, when I look in my stats, there is almost no visits to this blog, so the first thing I did, I tried a search in duckduckgo and to my surprise, my blog is not indexed!

Although duckduckgo does not track your searches, they do pull results from bing and yahoo. And we all know by now that yahoo results are from bing.

So I go to bing webmaster tools, I ran a tool called Fetch as Bingbot, this tool will run the bingbot as same as it would normally and give you the results if there was any errors.

The results came in 10 seconds and it said Status: redirection limit reached. Then on the first actual results line, it showed (HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently). I was like huh?!

I have done a ton of search, installed some SEO and xmlmaps plugins to this wordpress site and pinged a few services, I changed the theme and removed any extra plugins then waited for weeks and months and nothing happened.

After a few hours looking at all the articles and un-answered questions on wordpress forums and other sites, it was apparent that it was from the server side. I logged in and checked everything on the server side on WHM and on the specific cpanel. Nothing yet.

I reached my frustration limit and decided to contact my hosting company.

WITHIN 3 HOURS and 5 REPLIES to my ticket, we found the solution, and that’s why I love the top level service I get with Interserver hands down the best service I got from any hosting company in the past 15+ years.

At first I was redirected to the correct department, then his first idea was to look at the .htaccess file, which was perfectly fine.

His 2nd suggestion was that when you type guruofsales.com in any browser, it redirected to www.guruofsales.com, and that created a loop.

BOOM, the solution was to go to my wp admin area, go to settings>general  then remove the www from both the wordpress address and the site address. save the changes. immediately go to the fetch as bingbot toll and it’s completely fixed with the amazing message: HTTP/1.1 200 OK.

Now I just have to write a new blog post so it get’s pinged and sit back and relax. guruofsales.com should show on search engines very soon.
